Details Of The
Seahorse Whittler

TANG STAMPS

Pattern numbering. e.g. 6355WH SS
The first number represents the handle material 5
6
6.5
8
Stag
Bone
BoneStag
Mother of Pearl, Paua, Abalone, etc.
The second number is the number of blades 3
The next two numbers (and in this case the WH) is the knife pattern number 55WH All Seahorse Whittlers are 55WH
The suffix is the blade material SS
ATS-34
Stainless Steel
ATS-34 Steel
Prefix V Vintage Bone
Prefix EX Exotic Bone (e.g. Giraffe Bone)

This Pattern number is stamped on the back of the tang of the main Wharncliffe blade.

5 = Genuine Stag

6 = Bone

V = Vintage. As on the 05214 Vintage Bone

6.5 = BoneStag

8 = Mother of Pearl, Paua, Abalone

The tang stamp of the ATS-34 steel knife.
(All others are SS Stainless Steel)

The master blade has the Case name and the "date stamp"

Under the 2000 series stamps, Case began with five X's and 5 dots in the year 2000, taking away a dot for each year. The first Seahorse Whittler was produced in 2002.

 2002

2003

2004

But there is an anomoly. The "Case Brothers" knives had this stamp instead, and didn't have a date identifying system. Therefore it isn't possible to tell the date of manufacture of the knife. Although in the case of the Seahorse Whittler, it was only used on 2003/4 knives. A similar stamp will be used for the "Case Brothers" knives in 2005, but with a dating system incorporated into it to identify the date of manufacture.

And another odd one - CASE MFG.CO. on the "Family Brands" Seahorse Whittler, again without a date identifier.

The Case Select tang stamp (02452), without date identification.

BOLSTERS

The bolsters on most of the Case Seahorse Whittlers are  plain polished nickel silver. And very beautiful they are too!
There is one SFO knife that has very fine engraved bolsters, a 2002 Bone Stag. It is superb workmanship.
The knives from the special sets and "Mint Sets" have bolsters engraved with a scrolled pattern.

The John Deere knife serial number  on the bolster (1 of 2,500) with the leading 0
The knife from the 2002 "American Set" has the long tail C and the serial number on the bolster instead of on the master blade.

BLADE ETCHINGS, ENGRAVING and PRINTING

On the master Wharncliffe blade

The Case Brothers print. Used on the up-market knives.
Hint: The words "Case Brothers" on the blade are actually printed onto the steel, not etched. With use they wear off, and in fact, it is possible to scratch them off with a fingernail. If you want to keep it mint, then don't use it, or if like me, you use one of these knives, then simply accept it as normal wear. Actually, I'm quite proud of the fact that I do use mine!

The Limited XX Edition 1 of 3000. This also looks to be printed on rather than etched, although I haven't put one to the test of using it to see.

A serialised limited edition engraving - A long tailed C xx with an ® mark above, and the serial number (in this example "209") Most limited edition knives have the serial number on the blade. Note that only the official Case limited editions have the long tailed C serialisation. (Special Factory Order limited editions just have a number).

SHIELDS

There are many different shield types used on the Case Seahorse Whittler, but no knife is produced that only has a different shield in order to just make another variation.
