Cassell's Gatetteer of Great Britain & Ireland - 1898

Examples from pages

The books contain details of every city, town, village and hamlet in the whole of Great Britain and Ireland.

A massive amount of information!

What you see on screen from the CD is a total recreation of the six volumes of the books. We scanned them all to a very high quality indeed, saved all the scanned page images as TIFF files, and then used those to create PDF files for reading using Adobe Acrobat Reader. You read it just like a real book, and turn to any page, or flick from one page to the next. (It isn't just a loose collection of separate page images). We also added comprehensive bookmarks so that you can find your way around easily.

Below: some thumbnails from the original TIFF images. Note especially how many illustrations and old photographs there are. and how high quality the original scans are, for example image 22 is 2092x3044 pixels, (grey scale 300dpi) and 16.8 megabytes big!

Let's have a look at the sort of information contained for a small place.... as it was at the time great grandparents lived there in the late 1800s.

Alcester

Also, at the foot of each page of the gazetteer, is further information

All in all, the perfect reference book for family historians, and one which should be in everyone's collection.
