Shropshire: Bishop's Castle, Bridgenorth, Broseley (including Coalbrook-Dale, Coalport, Iron-Bridge and Madeley), Church Stretton, Cleobury Mortimer, Drayton (Market Drayton), Ellesmere, Hales Owen, Ludlow, Newport, Oswestry, Shiffnal, Shrewsbury, Wellington, Wem, Wenlock, Whitchurch. A very early and rare directory which covers the market towns and principal villages of the county (Please note that smaller villages and hamlets are not included). The descriptons of each place are excellent with lots of details about schools, hospitals, churches and other institutions plus detailed histories and directories of the nobility, gentry, clergy and classified directories of tradespeople. Also included is an excellent county map.

Bewdley, Blockley, Bromsgrove (with Tardebigg, Stoke Prior and Upton Warren), Dudley, Evesham, Feckenham, Kidderminster, Pershore, Redditch (with Alvechurch and Beoley), Shipton-upon Stour and Brails, Stourbridge (with Swinford, Brierley Hill, Cradley and Oldbury), Tenbury, Upton-upon-Severn, Worcester, Price: £9.79 £11.50 Including VAT at 17.5%
A good, though small, early county directory, which appeared before the first census of 1842, thus making it very valuable to the family history researcher. Gives good descriptions of the towns and main villages and their facilities, churches, schools, and institutions, etc. together with lists of all the people with trades. Price: £9.79 £11.50 Including VAT at 17.5%
The volumes contain tens of thousands of names, addresses, trades and occupations, and a comprehensive description of every place in the county and and its history. Bear in mind that directories such as this do not include just businesses, but anyone with a trade. So that includes normal people such as gardeners, dress makers, chimney sweeps, and so on.
In addition, we have a large hand coloured full county map of Worcestershire of 1840 - and also superbly detailed street maps of Dudley and Worcester - a great rarity in old directories, as the maps have usually been removed.
That's not all. There are dozens of pages of the most delightful trade advertisements, beautifully and finely engraved. Price: £15.11 £17.75 Including VAT at 17.5%

In order to demonstrate how owning these directories can help you in your research and how an apparently small difference in dates can make a *big* difference in the information gained, I looked up the very last name in the court section of this 1884 volume.
He was a Mr Henry Houghton YOXALL of 10 Park Road, Redditch.
In the 1888 directory he was still Henry Houghton YOXALL, but of simply 'Park Road, Redditch. No street number.
In the 1892 directory he is Henry H. YOXALL, back at number 10 Park Road. Now what does that 'H.' stand for?
In 1900 he was back to being Henry Houghton YOXALL and was still in Park Road, but he'd moved to number 15!
There are many more instances of this type of thing that you can find out from these directories. They are sometimes just small details but they are details neveretheless and they could just make the difference when researching census material.

A huge directory covering Worcestershire in 1940.
One of the great advantages of a "late" directory such as this is that it is so easy to trace heads of household either by name or street address. (In the main towns each street, and every numbered house is there, together with the head of household and their occupation). Don't think of it as being just a 1940 resource. You will find all branches of your family and their addresses, and then go look at those same addresses in all earlier resources. That's the kind of information that will pull down those brick walls in your earlier research.
Five huge volumes comprising the earliest directory for Great Britain, and one which is probably the most important directory for genealogists and historians that we have released on CD. For towns and villages the descriptions of the places are excellent, with details of their facilities, etc, and includes those residents with trades (even those such as farmers, hay-binders, labourers, bakers, shop keepers, etc.) and their addresses.
Although titled "Great Britain", this directory covers places in England and Wales. Volume 1 of the five is devoted to London, volumes 2 to 4 cover the places in the England and Wales in alphabetical order, and vol. 5 contains a number of the subsequent amendments and additions published in the next few years.
"The Universal British Directory of Trade, Commerce, and Manufacture, comprehending Lists of the Inhabitants of London, Westminster, and Borough of Southwark; and of all the Cities, Towns, and principal Villages, in England and Wales; with the Mails, and other Coaches, stage-wagons, Hoys, Packets, and Trading Vessels. To which is added, a genuine Account of the Drawbacks and Duties chargeable at the Custom-House on all Goods and Mechandize, imported, exported, or carried coastwise, with a particular of the Public Offices of every denomination; His Majesty's Court, and Ministers of State; The Peers of the Realm, and Parliament of Great Britain; The Court of Lord Mayor, Sheriffs, Aldermen, and Common-Council, of London; together with an Historical Detail of the Antiquities, Curiosities, Trade, Polity, and Manufacturers, of each City, Town, and Village. The whole comprising a Fund of useful and important Information, equally interesting to the Nobleman, the Gentleman, and Man of Business."
